The Germanic older Futhark is the oldest runic alphabet and its name is derived from the sound of the first runes (F, U, Th, A, R, K). Runes persisted in Scandinavia until the year 1100. 
However, the use of the runic alphabet for special purposes (e.g. for decorations) lasted in the Swedish countryside until the beginning of the 20th century.
