RM Lorica Hamata, ID 6 mm, riveted/stamped

The Lorica Hamata was the typical ring armour of the Roman legionary and Celt.

Included is a shoulder doubling (collar) made of the same material, with leather trim, brass buttons and hooks. The leather is vegetable tanned. These armours are made with excellent craftsmanship.

The RM type of ring armour is made up of small rings with an internal diameter of only 6 mm. According to historical finds, this type of armour consists of rows of riveted round rings (with convex rivet heads) and stamped flat rings that alternate. Already in antiquity, as well as today, this extremely small inner diameter of the rings allows the production of this ring armour from 1mm steel without reducing its efficiency, resulting in a weight saving of approximately 30-35%.

The general abbreviation for this armour is RM (Roman Mail) because it was popular with the ancient Celts and Romans (Lorica Hamata). However, the use of this type continued in later periods and armour of this type was commonly worn until the late Middle Ages.

All dimensions are measured at maximum stretch.

  • Inner diameter of the ring: approx. 6 mm
  • Ring width: approx. 1 mm
  • Finish: natural (lightly oiled)
