Celtic helmet Port bei Nidau

This Celtic/Gaelic helmet was inspired by surviving examples, the most important of which is the iron Port bei Nidau helmet, which was discovered almost intact in the Thiella River near the town of Port (near Nidau, Switzerland) in the late 19th century. The original artifact is dated to the 1st century BC and is classified as a Late Latenian helmet (also known as Laten III or Laten D).

The Port-type helmet has its roots in eastern Gaul. Its characteristic features include an arched bell-shaped cap, a distinctive riveted occipital shield, and embossed eyebrows and cheekpieces. Although this helmet is undoubtedly of Celtic origin and was worn by the Gauls, it is thought to have also appeared in the ranks of the Roman army during Caesar's Gallic Wars (58-50 BC). This specific shape was eventually adopted by the Romans and gradually evolved into the so-called Imperial Gallic helmet of the Weisenau type, the classic helmet of the Roman legionaries.

This reconstruction of the Gallic Port helmet with movable cheekpieces is made of 1.2 mm thick steel (18 gauge). The distinctive occipital shield is attached to the main bell by five round rivets. The inside of the helmet is not lined, but a padded cotton cap is included to ensure a comfortable fit. The cheekpieces are also fitted with small rings for easy attachment of the chin strap.
