Viking shields played a key role in the defence and combat of Viking warriors between the 8th and 11th centuries. They were usually circular, made of wood and often covered with leather. The centre of the shield was protected by a metal bud, which protected the arm and served to deflect blows. The diameter of the shields varied between 70 and 100 cm, which allowed for quick manoeuvring. Archaeological finds and depictions show that shields were often decorated with paintings or symbols that expressed the identity of the warrior or his tribe. The shields of Viking warriors were used not only for defence, but also to create defensive formations such as the shield wall.
