Thor's hammer in the so-called Oseberg style, which is a Viking art movement that has been described from the rich finds at Tønsberg Farm, Vestfold, Norway. The main motif of this unusual hammer (the head) is taken from the prow of a drakkar, a Viking ship.
Thor's hammer, or Mjöllnir, is a magical weapon belonging to the god of the same name. It was worn as a pendant around the neck, especially by Nordic warriors and Viking sailors. Thor's hammer is unbreakable, always hits its target and then returns to its owner's hand. This hammer flies across the sky in the form of lightning. Mjöllnir means "crusher". Thor did not use it only to kill giants, but with it he could revive his magical goats, bless marriages with it, or plough the fields. To wield this terrible weapon safely, Thor has metal gauntlets and a belt that multiplies its power tenfold.
