Amulets known as lunulae or lunitsas, shaped like a crescent moon, were primarily associated in the Middle Ages with feminine strength, fertility, and the power of the Moon. Women wore them as protective amulets intended to safeguard the expectant mother and her unborn child.
However, crescent-shaped amulets have a much older tradition. They were already widespread in Roman times, where they were associated with the cult of Luna, the Roman goddess of the Moon. Archaeological finds of similar lunar amulets have been discovered in Roman settlements dating back to the 2nd century AD.
The crescent moon motif also appeared among the Germanic peoples and later became particularly widespread among the medieval Slavs.
