Cernunnos – the Horned One, Lord of the Wildwood, Celtic God of nature, wild animals and fertility. His realm begins where the world of men falls silent and among the ancient trees only the rustling of leaves, the cracking of branches and the footsteps of wild creatures can be heard.
Perhaps you have already felt His presence. Deep in the forest, in the morning mist above a meadow, or while wandering alone through the countryside, when for a fleeting moment it seems that someone is standing among the trees – someone who was here long before us. Perhaps you caught only a glimpse of a shadow crowned with antlers – and before you could turn around, the forest had taken Him back into its embrace.
Cernunnos is the Lord of the Wild and guardian of all living things. He rules over the forests and their creatures, the power of the earth and the eternal cycle of life, death and rebirth. He is associated with abundance and fertility, but also with the mysterious realm beyond our own. He stands between the world of humankind and untamed nature, between life and the Otherworld.
His most famous ancient depiction can be found on the renowned Gundestrup Cauldron. Here Cernunnos sits with the antlers of a stag upon His head. In one hand He holds a torc – a neck ring symbolising power and high status – while in the other He grasps a horned serpent. The serpent, a creature of the earth and the world beneath it, evokes a connection with the deeper forces of nature, transformation, death and rebirth.
Cernunnos is no lord of temples built by human hands. His temple is the forest itself. He is in the stag standing motionless among the trees, in the roots of ancient oaks, in the murmuring waters and in the silence of the forest at dusk. He is a reminder of the ancient bond between humankind and the earth – a bond older than cities, kings and written history.
Enter the wildwood quietly. Perhaps the Horned One still walks there.
