Map: Comparative Heights of the Principal Mountains and Lengths of the Principal Rivers in the World – handmade paper

A reproduction of a pioneering thematic map by British cartographer and engraver W. R. Gardner, published in London in 1823 by William Darton. Gardner’s work is considered the first known map to combine, on a single sheet, a comparison of the heights of the world’s highest mountains and the lengths of its most significant rivers, thereby laying the foundation for a popular 19th-century cartographic style.

The map clearly depicts mountain ranges and river systems in a comparative overview based on the geographical knowledge of the time. Although some of the data has since been refined by later discoveries, it remains a valuable document of the development of the geographical sciences and cartography in the early 19th century.
