Cerberus is known in Greek mythology as the dog with three heads, guarding the gates of the underworld to prevent the dead from escaping and the living from getting in. He is sometimes referred to with a serpent's tail or snakes on his body. In some ancient sources he had dozens or hundreds of heads - for example, Hesiodos mentions fifty heads, Pindaros a hundred.

The most famous story involving Cerberus is the twelfth quest of the hero Heracles: he was to bring him back to Earth from the underworld. Heraklês transported Cerberus after taming him without using weapons, according to some versions using his lion skin as a shield.
