Eye of Horus pendant on chain
This Wajet (Eye of Horus) pendant is made of metal and decorated with a distinctive coloured enamel filling. The pendant comes on a gold chain. It is mounted on a folding information card which displays a pectoral on the front with the motif of the Eye of Wadjet and hieroglyphics on the sides. One of the main purposes of jewellery in ancient Egypt was its use as amulets and talismans to protect the wearer from unknown and hostile forces.
The finest jewelry was worn only by the king, the royal family, the court and the temple priests. The court and temples were thus the main commissioners of work for goldsmiths, and most of the gold produced was kept in the royal treasury.
