Bowie knife originated in the first half of the 19th century in the USA and is associated with Jim Bowie, who became famous after the so-called Sandbar Fight in 1827. The first version of the knife was probably designed by his brother Rezin Bowie as a tool for self-defense.

Gradually, the shape developed – the typical clip point, guard and robust blade were added. The knife spread among settlers, hunters and soldiers on the American frontier. During the Texas Revolution and later in the Civil War, the Bowie knife was a common part of equipment.

In the second half of the 19th century, it also began to be produced in Europe, especially in Sheffield. Today, the Bowie knife is associated with American history and traditional knifemaking.
