The Supermarine Spitfire was a British single-seat fighter aircraft that became a symbol of World War II and especially the Battle of Britain. Designed by R. J. Mitchell, it featured sleek elliptical wings, excellent agility and high speed. With successively improved versions, powered primarily by Rolls-Royce Merlin and later Griffon engines, the Spitfire remained competitive throughout the war. It served as a fighter, reconnaissance aircraft and bomber escort. It was also flown by Czechoslovak RAF pilots, who achieved a number of significant successes against the Luftwaffe.
