Rings had both symbolic and practical meaning in antiquity and the Middle Ages . In antiquity they served as seals and signs of power, worn mainly by the elite. The Romans used signet rings to authenticate documents. In the Middle Ages, rings were a symbol of loyalty, faith and power, often associated with the church and the nobility. Rings also had a protective and magical function.
