Brigid’s Cross (Irish: Crosóg Bhríde) is one of the oldest symbols of Irish culture. The feast day of Saint Brigid falls on 1 February, the same day as the ancient pagan festival of Imbolc, celebrating the end of winter, the return of light and the beginning of new life.
According to Irish tradition, Brigid wove the first cross from rushes while speaking with a dying pagan chieftain. From then on, crosses were woven each year from fresh rushes and hung above the entrance door or in the centre of the home as protection against misfortune, fire and evil forces. They were also believed to provide the same protection to farms and domestic animals.
Alongside the shamrock and the Celtic harp, Brigid’s Cross is one of the national symbols of Ireland. The most widespread form is a cross with a diamond-shaped centre, traditionally associated particularly with the Irish provinces of Munster and Connacht.
