Cailleach is the powerful and mysterious Celtic Goddess of winter, storms and wild nature. Her name in Gaelic means old woman or old woman, and she is often depicted as an old woman with blue skin, white hair and a staff who controls the weather.
Cailleach is considered in Celtic tradition to be the mistress of the mountains and stones, the creator of the landscape and the personification of the raw forces of nature. According to legend, she built mountains by dropping stones from baskets and turning the land into barren earth with her touch. During the winter she rules the land with frost and snow, but in spring her power wanes and returns to the younger goddesses, bringing renewal.
Cailleach is a symbol of the cycle of life and death, change and renewal, a reminder of the inevitable mutability of time and nature. In modern paganism, she is revered as the protector of the wilderness, the old traditions and the wisdom of old age.
