Celtic shield inspired by the weaponry of the Late La Tène period. It has an elongated oval shape and a curved body made from bent plywood, covered with natural linen. The edge is bound with rawhide, which reinforces the rim and protects it from damage. A metal boss with a circular base covers the centre of the shield.
The shield boss, also known as an umbo, protected the hand holding the central grip behind an opening in the shield board. The elongated shape provided the warrior with extensive coverage while allowing quick changes in the shield’s position. Shields were an essential part of La Tène weaponry and were used alongside a sword or spear.
Archaeological knowledge of Celtic shields is based primarily on surviving metal components, particularly bosses, grip fittings and rim fittings. Wooden shield boards and other organic materials survive only under favourable conditions.
