The glass bead fish is a traditional Christmas ornament handmade in Poniklá in the Krkonoše Mountains. The fish is one of the old symbols of Christmas and has been associated with the festive season in Czech lands for centuries – not only on the Christmas Eve table, but also as a decorative motif.
The production of glass bead Christmas ornaments is a traditional Czech craft with a history spanning more than a century. Individual beads are blown from glass tubes, silvered on the inside with real silver and then assembled by hand into the finished ornament. Before an ornament is complete, each bead passes through several pairs of skilled hands.
Glass bead making has a particularly long tradition in Poniklá in the Krkonoše Mountains. The handmade production of Christmas ornaments from blown glass beads was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2020.
