The Claddagh symbol comes from the small fishing village of Claddagh, which was located near the city of Galway on the west coast of Ireland. The origin of this motif dates back to the 17th century and is linked to the legend of a local goldsmith named Richard Joyce.
According to tradition, Joyce was kidnapped by pirates as a young man and sold into slavery in North Africa, where he trained as a goldsmith. Years later he was released and returned to Galway. To commemorate his faithful love, he created a ring with the symbol of two hands, a heart and a crown - the Claddagh.
The hands represent friendship, the heart love and the crown loyalty. Claddagh rings have been handed down from generation to generation in Galway and have become a symbol of local identity. They are still one of Ireland' s most famous pieces of jewellery and are often used as friendship, engagement and wedding rings.
