This Roman-Celtic boar-shaped brooch is made of metal and decorated with red enamel. It has a fastening mechanism on the back so that it can be easily attached to clothing. The brooch comes in a gift box with a card containing historical information.
This brooch is an exact replica of a 1st century Roman fibula (clothespin) in the shape of a boar . This design was itself inspired by even earlier Celtic boar motifs.
The animals depicted on ancient Roman zoomorphic jewellery were usually styled after creatures that had spiritual significance to the Celts. These included hares, swans, deer, fish, horses, eagles and boar.
Boars roamed the forests of ancient Britain and were hunted by the Romans. The boar symbolised strength and depictions of it, alone or as part of hunting scenes, have been found as decoration on a wide range of objects.
