The Bowie knife originated in the first half of the 19th century in the USA and is associated with Jim Bowie, who became famous after the so-called Sandbar Fight in 1827. The first versions of the knife were probably designed by his brother Rezin Bowie as a practical tool for self-defense.
Gradually the shape evolved - adding the typical clip point, guard and sturdy blade. The knife became widespread among settlers, hunters, and soldiers on the American frontier. During the Texas Revolution and later in the Civil War, the Bowie knife was a common piece of equipment.
In the second half of the 19th century, it began to be manufactured in Europe, particularly in Sheffield, England. Today, the Bowie knife is associated with American history and traditional knifemaking.
