Replica of Germanic brooch of Hahnheim type. Detailed replica of a zoomorphic Hahnheim type brooch based on a 6th-7th century find from Kent/England.

Five-button brooches with a radial head, such as this one, were worn mainly by West Germanic women in the early Middle Ages and were very common. Such brooches are found mainly in the Rhineland, but were also widespread across northern France to southern England.

Bow brooches were worn as a pair at the waist to fasten a woman's tunic. In the early Middle Ages, brooches were part of the so-called four-brooch costume, which was characteristic of the clothing of Merovingian women.

In the four-brooch costume, two larger bow brooches were worn at the bottom of the garment and two smaller S-fibulae at the top.

The original of this five-button brooch was originally made with carnelian inlays and is now in the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford/England. We offer this replica brooch made of bronze and silver with red glass inlays.

The back of the five button brooch has a strong needle that securely fastens even the stronger fabrics.

  • The dimensions of the Hahnheim brooch are 6 x 3,3 cm.
