In the late Middle Ages and Early Modern period, plate gauntlets were an indispensable part of a suit of armour. They protected the hands and wrists during close combat as well as during jousting tournaments.
The late medieval battle gauntlets we offer here, also known as hourglass gauntlets due to their characteristic hourglass-like shape, are based on historical originals believed to have been crafted by a Milanese armourer in the second half of the 14th century (around 1370). The originals are now housed in the Museo Nazionale del Bargello in Florence, Italy.
The gauntlets are made of 1.6 mm thick steel and, like their historical counterparts, are decorated and reinforced with brass elements on the back of the hand, around the wrist and along the lower edge of the cuff. The inside of the steel parts is blackened to improve corrosion resistance.
The articulated construction of these battle gauntlets with movable fingers provides adequate freedom of movement. Comfortable wear is ensured by integrated black suede gloves, riveted and stitched to the plates, as well as additional finger padding made of thick leather. A brown leather strap across the palm helps keep each gauntlet securely in place during combat.
This pair of fully functional and wearable steel plate gauntlets is suitable for historical fencing, reenactment and stage combat. Their design is particularly appropriate for the late Middle Ages and makes them an excellent addition to the knightly armour of a 14th-century European warrior.
