This separable Viking pendant for lovers, inspired by the historical find known as the “Guldgubbe,” depicts a couple of lovers embracing and kissing.
The pendant is a beautiful gift of love for couples in love. It can be separated in the middle into two parts, so that each partner can wear one half of the pendant around their neck.
This Viking pendant is modeled after the so-called Guldgubbe, found on the Danish island of Bornholm.
The term “Guldgubbe” refers to small figurative gold plaques measuring approximately one to two centimeters, dating from the Iron Age and found exclusively in Scandinavia. The largest number of these plates was found on the Danish island of Bornholm. At the Sorte Muld site near Svaneke alone, approximately 2,500 pieces were discovered.
Guldgubbe most commonly depict figures of men and women, couples, and animals. The exact purpose of these tiny gold plates is unknown. They may have been votive offerings or objects used in rituals.
A common motif is couples embracing or kissing. These scenes are often interpreted as symbols of marriage and fertility, or as depictions of divine couples.
The oldest figurative gold plates of this type date from the Germanic Iron Age, approximately 375 CE, and were in use until the Viking Age. They reached their peak popularity during the Vendel period ( ca. 550–800 CE).
