Small combs were commonly used in the Middle Ages for beard grooming and especially for removing lice. This bronze comb is fully functional and suitable for both hair and beard care.

Symbolism and Satirical Motif

The comb is decorated with an engraving of a copulating couple and was not originally intended for practical use. It was a satirical pewter badge, worn during carnival celebrations.

The erotic motif was likely meant as an ironic reference to the fact that brothel-goers often had to use a similar comb to groom themselves after their visits.
