Medieval pilgrim brooch - "Phallic creature with a bird", which is equipped with a moving bell.

This unusual medieval pilgrim brooch depicts a typical phallic creature and was created from a find from the Netherlands, dating from 1400 to 1450 AD. The original plaque was made of pewter and is now in the Langbroek Collection, Van Breuningen.

These medieval pilgrim jewels were especially widespread in the Netherlands, but also in Belgium and England. It is believed that they were used to entertain during the carnival.

It is believed that people in the Middle Ages wanted to lighten sexuality with comic poutonic signs and used them as a means of communication to establish sexual relationships, especially during the whimsical customs of Mardi Gras.
