The design on this deck of cards was inspired by ancient Celtic manuscripts from the 9th century that monks painted on parchment or calfskin. The three-leaf shamrock , known as a shamrock, was used by St. Patrick to explain the Holy Trinity when he brought Christianity to Ireland in the 5th century. Since then, March 17 has been celebrated as St. Patrick's Day.
