This quilted doublet, also known as a gambeson, pourpoint or aketon, is an essential piece of equipment for historical fencing and reenactment. During the High and Late Middle Ages, it was worn beneath plate armour to improve comfort, absorb the impact of blows and help reduce the risk of injury. It features the characteristic short, close-fitting cut typical of the period.
This model is constructed from three layers: a durable cotton canvas outer, a polyester padded core and a soft cotton lining. The quilting keeps the padding securely in place while providing excellent wearing comfort.
The doublet fastens with laces. Additional lacing points with reinforced embroidered eyelets at the skirt and sleeves allow the attachment of chausses or pieces of plate armour. The characteristically enlarged armholes follow the authentic cut of the late 14th century and provide improved freedom of movement. The high shaped collar offers increased comfort when wearing neck protection and other armour components.
