Roman oil lamps were a source of light as well as a vehicle for artistic motifs. Mythological scenes, gods, gladiators or everyday scenes of life often appeared on their surface. Musical motifs were also popular, such as figures playing the lyre, flute or other instruments, reflecting the importance of music in Roman culture. Decorations also had symbolic meanings, such as protective or religious. Lamps were made of ceramic or metal and their decoration varied according to the region and the social status of the owner.
