The Roman infantry ruler is made of plastic and measures 30 cm. It displays the scale in both inches and centimetres. The inch side contains 1/16th inch pieces and the centimetre side contains 1 millimetre pieces.
The front of the ruler shows the banners of the four legions of the Emperor Claudius that invaded Britain. There are also eagle standards on the sides of the title with the abbreviation SPQR(Senatus Populusque Romanus), meaning "Senate and People of Rome".
On the back of the ruler is another banner of SPQR and pictures of a centurion, legionary, standard bearer and vexillum. There is also historical information about the Roman army.
The Roman army was made up of groups of soldiers called legions. Each legion had more than 5,400 soldiers and its own number, name, emblem and fortress. In 43 AD, the Emperor Claudius invaded Britain with four legions: II Augusta, IX Hispana, XIV Gemina and XX Valeria Victrix.
