The Scottish thistle (genus Onopordum or Cirsium) is one of the most important national symbols of Scotland. Its symbolic significance has been documented since the Middle Ages. Tradition has it that the thistle played a key role in the defence of the Scots against a night attack by Norse raiders, when one of the attackers stepped on a thistle with his bare foot and a cry alerted the defenders. Since the 15th century the thistle has appeared on coins, seals and royal insignia. In 1687 the Order of the Thistle, Scotland's highest knightly decoration, was founded. The thistle symbolises the resilience, pride and defensiveness traditionally associated with Scottish identity.
