Tatami Omote, mat for practicing sit-ups, approx. 180 x 90 cm

This straw mat is used to perform the traditional Japanese chopping test using a samurai sword (especially a katana or wakizashi). The ancient art of tameshigiri, which was practiced in Japan to test the power and sharpness of swords and to demonstrate the skills of testers and fighters, is still popular today. Different techniques of chopping are practiced on omote mats, using either one or both hands. The quality of the blade and the practitioner's chopping technique is reflected in the cutting surface of the mat.

Our tatami omote are woven from straw. They are of basic quality, but sturdy, easy to cut through, and despite the low price, will satisfy the needs of sword testers. We supply an unbound mat measuring approximately 180 x 90 cm and 2 to 2.3 mm thick. When rolled up it has a diameter of about 8 cm.

To prepare for chopping tests, the mat should be rolled as tightly as possible, tied securely and immersed in water for several hours to soak. The soaked roll should then be allowed to dry completely (upright). This process will allow the mat to reach the desired density and consistency for the chopping exercise. The finished mat can now be mounted on a tameshigiri stand and used.

Of course, in addition to its use as a martial arts accessory, our tatami omote can also serve other purposes such as a floor covering, a lightweight screen/screen, a protective cover, or just as a decorative element (for the home, garden, or special Asian-themed events).

We would like to point out that chopping tests should only be carried out by persons experienced in handling samurai swords. Lack of knowledge or skill can lead not only to damage or even breaking of the blade, but also to endangering your health or the health of others. We are not responsible for any property damage, accidents or injuries incurred during test chopping.

As straw is a natural product, please note that colour variations are common. The above pictures are therefore only indicative. The color shade can vary from greenish to yellowish/brownish and the discoloration is part of the natural aging of straw. Exposure to direct sunlight accelerates this natural fading process.

If you do not plan to use the mat immediately after delivery, please store it in a dry place.
