The tundra may not be a forest in the true sense of the word, as trees only appear at its edges, where they merge into other vegetation, but the overall atmosphere of the northern landscapes is quite unique. The abundance of mosses and lichens gives the impression that life persists and grows even during the harshest winters. When snow covers the tundra, glimpses of different colours can be seen in the pure whiteness - as if the leaves themselves have turned white and everything else has remained green.
