Code: BHJ9851

Bronze belt mount featuring a hare armed with an axe. The motif is inspired by medieval marginalia – small drawings in the margins of manuscripts depicting fantastical animals, caricatures and scenes that turn the usual order of the world upside down. The hare, normally hunted as prey, takes on the role of an armed warrior.

  • Material: bronze
  • Height: 24 mm
  • Cast using the lost-wax method
  • Made in our own workshop

The motif is loosely based on a depiction of a hare with an axe from a manuscript held in the library of the Sorbonne in Paris under the shelfmark MS 121, folio 23. Dating from the 13th–14th century, the manuscript contains Aristotle’s On the Soul and Physics, with a commentary by Giles of Rome.
