Celtic Belt Buckle of Glauberg
The Celtic Belt Buckle of Glauberg is an impressive replica of a masterpiece of Celtic craftsmanship. The original dates to the 5th century BC and belongs to the Early La Tène period.
This replica is based on a belt hook discovered in Grave No. 2 at the important Celtic site of Glauberg in Germany. While the original was cast in solid bronze, this replica is made of Zamak with a brass-coloured finish. It differs slightly from the historical original in a few details.
Instead of a traditional hook, the reverse side features a sturdy pin that fits into the holes of the belt, ensuring a secure fastening.
The buckle measures 7.3 × 4.3 cm and is suitable for belts 4 cm wide.
Three rivets are attached to the back of the buckle, onto which the supplied caps are fitted. With a few light hammer taps, the buckle can be securely mounted to the belt.
During the 1990s, archaeologists excavated a remarkable Celtic burial mound dating to the Early La Tène period at Glauberg in Germany. Glauberg was an important princely centre with a fortified settlement, a large ritual complex, and served as a religious, economic, and political hub of the early Celts.
The excavation revealed the richly furnished graves of three Celtic warriors from the 5th century BC, among the most spectacular discoveries of their period. Besides this belt buckle, archaeologists uncovered an ornate fibula, a bronze vessel, a golden torc, and a nearly life-sized sandstone statue of a man wearing the famous mistletoe leaf headdress. The statue is regarded as one of the greatest archaeological discoveries of the Celtic world and is believed to depict a local Celtic prince.
