Celtic Belt Hook with Horse Head
This replica of a Celtic belt hook featuring a horse head is based on an archaeological find dating to the 2nd century BC and represents a typical accessory of the La Tène culture.
The original model for this replica is preserved in the Archaeological Museum of the City of Kelheim and is dated to the La Tène C period. A very similar horse-head belt hook from the Late La Tène period is also housed in the Württemberg State Museum.
The belt hook is fitted with a ring measuring 3.8 cm in outer diameter (inner diameter 3.2 cm), allowing it to be attached to a leather belt or belt chain, as was common among the Celts. A matching ring for the opposite side of the belt is included.
The hook is suitable for belts up to 3 cm wide. Its dimensions are 5 × 2 × 1 cm. Made from zinc alloy with a brass-coloured finish.
Between the 3rd and 1st centuries BC, the important Celtic oppidum of Alkimoennis stood near present-day Kelheim at the confluence of the Danube and Altmühl rivers. Covering approximately 600 hectares, it was one of the largest oppida of the La Tène period and was mentioned around AD 100 by the ancient geographer Claudius Ptolemy.
