They've been in the Czech lands for as long as our ancestors can remember, and maybe even longer. And although modern fairy tales have transformed them into an often endearing form, they were originally fierce, vengeful and bloodthirsty creatures.

The author Jan Kravčík has drawn on hundreds of Czech and German tales, and the book has been embellished with impressive pictures by Latvian illustrator Līga Kļaviņa-Raiska.
