The Bowie knife originated in the first half of the 19th century in the USA and is associated with Jim Bowie, who became famous after the so-called Sandbar Fight in 1827. The first version of the knife was probably designed by his brother Rezin Bowie as a self-defense tool.
Over time, the design evolved – gaining the characteristic clip-point tip, guard, and robust blade. The knife became popular among settlers, hunters, and soldiers on the American frontier. During the Texas Revolution and later the Civil War, the Bowie knife was a common part of equipment.
In the second half of the 19th century, it also began to be produced in Europe, especially in Sheffield, England. Today, the Bowie knife is closely associated with American history and traditional knifemaking.
