- GREAT HELM Bolzano - 1300
The large helmet, a bucket helmet, was found in Bolzano in the Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol region of Italy. It dates from around 1300 and probably belonged to a knight of the Teutonic Knights. The Order of the Brethren of the German House of the Virgin Mary in Jerusalem, known as the Order of the Teutonic Knights, was founded in 1192 in the Holy Land. In 1202, the Order of the Teutonic Knights established a Commandery in Bolzano/Bozen.
The original helmet is now on display in the armour collection of the National Museum of Castel Sant'Angelo in Rome. The helmet is conical in shape with a cut-off top and has T-shaped holes on each side for breathing.
