Hrrr, at them!!! Hussite hoodie. A legacy of defiance and refusal to submit to the majority – something most of us carry within.

Behold the great hero! Jan Žižka of Trocnov, a mighty and fearless man whose name burns like an eternal flame in the hearts of the Czech people!

His life, like the legends of old, was interwoven with miracles and acts of heroism that surpass all worldly transience. He came from Trocnov, born in the Czech lands around the year 1360. Of his youth we know little with certainty, yet he grew strong of heart and unafraid. He etched the flame of his courage deeply into the history of the Hussite movement. His deeds stand as an example of foresight and mastery of the art of war.

He wore a band over one eye, perhaps since his youth, yet his strength never failed him. At first he lived by banditry, but by the grace of our king he set out toward a new destiny.

He allowed himself to be hired as a mercenary and first served the Polish king Władysław II Jagiełło. He fought at his side against the Teutonic Order.

However, in the year 1414 he entered the service of the Czech king. Thus, under the reign of Wenceslas IV, he encountered in Prague the teachings of Jan Hus, which ignited the flame of reform in his heart.

In the years 1419 and 1420, a revolt against ecclesiastical tyranny broke out. Then Žižka rose against the enemies of truth and justice, taking up arms. After the great act of the Prague defenestration on 30 July 1419, and victories at Nekmíř and Sudoměř, he showed his unbreakable resolve and military genius. The Battle of Vítkov Hill in 1420, when he repelled the siege of the city, sealed his fame.

At the head of the Hussite armies, he achieved many victories and drove foreign forces and internal enemies in rout across the land. How many church estates, towns, and castles of the Catholic nobility were doomed by his campaigns!

It then came to pass that Jan Žižka of Trocnov was knighted in the year 1422.

Although he destroyed the crusading armies and captured many towns, he did not escape human weakness and fratricidal conflicts. He continued to triumph despite losing his second eye during the siege of Rabí Castle.

He perished not by human hand, but by treacherous illness, in the military camp near Přibyslav on 11 October 1424.

Thus departed from this world Jan Žižka of Trocnov, a great hero, champion and commander.

Yet his name and deeds remain immortal in the hearts of those who come after him and fight their own battles for freedom and truth.
