Leshy, the Slavic spirit of the forest, is an ancient guardian of the wilderness, trees and animals. In folk tales he appears as a shape-shifting creature - sometimes he takes the form of a bearded man blending into the bark of the trees, sometimes he disappears completely among the shadows of the forest. His height changes according to the trees around him, and his voice can mimic the wind, the snapping of branches and the calls of animals. The forest protects the balance of nature, but its behaviour towards humans is erratic: it can lead those who respect the forest down the right path, while it likes to lead proud or greedy travellers astray. He represents the power of wild nature, which cannot be controlled, only honoured.
