The Lords of Talmberk were one of the oldest Czech noble families - their origins are said to date back to the 12th century and are documented to the 13th century, as their coat of arms is known from this time thanks to their seals. The history of Talmberk Castle, which gave the family its name, is linked in written sources to the year 1291, when the elder member of the family, Hroznata of Úžice, divided the family property among his descendants. His son Arnošt received the castle, completed its construction and was known as Arnošt of Talmberk. Although the family was not among the richest and most influential nobility, it belonged to the higher nobility - the nobility.

Some of the most dramatic moments in the history of the family took place at the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries and were directly related to Talmberk Castle. From 1389, the castle was occupied by Diviš of Talmberk, who had disputes with Havel Medek of Valdek. The latter and his army besieged the castle in 1391, conquered it, imprisoned Mr. Divis and held it until 1397 - he even had the audacity to be titled "of Talmberk". Havel, however, was declared a disturber of the peace and charged at the provincial court in Prague, where he was also convicted in absentia. The castle was to be returned to its owner and all damages compensated. Eventually, however, the provincial cash army had to be brought out to recapture the castle and Divis was freed. Diviš of Talmberk was soon afterwards given the prestigious office of purgrave of Prague Castle.

It seems that dramatic events continued in the first half of the 15th century - the lords of Talmberk remained Catholics even after the outbreak of the Hussite Revolution and remained loyal to Emperor Sigismund of Luxembourg. During the subsequent Hussite wars, they lost Talmberk Castle, although it is not clear exactly when and under what circumstances.
