This historically accurate women’s coif is made of smooth cotton fabric. It features a generously sized brim and can be tied at the back with strings. Decorative pleats starting at the inner edge of the brim give the coif a historical appearance and also provide it with a firm structure.
In the Middle Ages and the early modern period, the coif was a common headdress for married women, while girls and unmarried women were allowed to wear their hair uncovered (hence the German expression “unter die Haube kommen”, literally “to come under the bonnet,” which is still used today to mean “to get married”). Coifs also served a practical purpose by protecting the hair from dirt during household chores and other activities.
This beautiful pleated women’s coif is ideal for medieval markets, LARP, reenactment, or living history.
