A replica of the famous circular buckle from the British Museum
England or France, 13th century
Brass casting, glass stones
Diameter: 50-55 mm
This precise replica is based on the famous Gothicannular brooch, preserved in the British Museum. The original dates from the 13th century and probably originated in England or northern France, where similar jewellery was very popular among the upper classes.
On the reverse of the clasp is an enamelled inscription in Old French:
"IO SUI ICI EN LIU DAMI: AMO:",
which translates as:
"I am here in the place of the friend I love."
This quote expresses courtly devotion and love, as was common in the ideals of courtly culture in the High Middle Ages. Clasps of this type were worn by both men and women - not only as a functional addition to clothing, but also as a symbolic piece of jewelry with a message that often carried personal, amorous, or spiritual meaning.
This replica is made of brass and set with glass stones, faithfully replicating the original materials and appearance of medieval brooches.
