Cloak clasps were an important element of clothing in the 14th-15th centuries, fulfilling both a functional and decorative role. They were used to fasten a cloak or outer garment and were often made of metals such as bronze, brass, silver or pewter. Their shapes and decorative motifs varied according to the region and the social status of the wearer. In the urban environments of the late Middle Ages, ornate examples with engraving, filigree or enamel decoration were common, while simpler cast-iron versions were common among the rural population.
Archaeological finds from Germany, the Netherlands and England attest to the widespread use of clasps with hook or chain links, often accompanied by heraldic or floral ornamentation. These clasps were not only a practical closure, but also a symbol of personal identity, loyalty or professional affiliation. In the High and Late Middle Ages, the cloak clasp thus became one of the characteristic attributes of the clothing culture of the European nobility and bourgeoisie.
