The wappenrock (also called a coat of arms, armour coat, tappert or surcot) appeared in the 12th century and was worn by knights over plate or ring armour. It protected the wearer from direct sunlight on the battlefield, and the various colour combinations made it easy to spot allies and enemies in the confusion of battle.
Depictions of medieval coats of arms can be found in numerous places - for example, in the 13th-century Maciejow Bible (Crusader Bible) or in the Codex Manesse, a collection of songs from the early 14th century.
The typical feature of the wappenrock is a simple, straight cut. If you want to accentuate the waist, we recommend combining it with a leather belt.
