The symbolism of the peacock in the Middle Ages combined beauty with deep spiritual meaning. The peacock was seen as a sign of immortality and resurrection, as its flesh was believed to be imperishable, and thus became a symbol of eternal life and hope. The eyes on its outstretched tail represented divine omniscience and watchfulness, while its magnificent feathers referred to royal glory, dignity and heavenly beauty. At the same time, however, the peacock also served as a moral warning against pride and vanity, as its flamboyant appearance contrasted with its unlovely voice - a common motif in medieval allegories. Thanks to this ambiguity, the peacock became a popular motif in both ecclesiastical and courtly art, and it still symbolizes a combination of aesthetics, spirituality, and deeper meaning.
