Czech Lion – a symbol of Czech statehood. May it always stand tall and proud. The expression of this lion is far from that of a silent coat of arms; it radiates pride, determination, and a fierce sense of strength.
The Czech Lion is a traditional heraldic symbol of the Czech lands, with historical origins dating back to the High Middle Ages. The earliest documented use of the double-tailed lion is associated with the Přemyslid dynasty in the 13th century, particularly during the reign of King Přemysl Otakar I. According to historical and heraldic research, the lion evolved from an earlier single-tailed motif, with the second tail representing royal prestige and distinction. In medieval heraldry, it symbolized courage, power, and the legitimacy of the ruler. The Czech Lion gradually became the coat of arms of the Kingdom of Bohemia and later of the Czech state.
