While mastering a sword took years, halberds required constant training, and bows demanded great patience, maces were always known for their surprising simplicity. Lift it high, bring it down hard – as the common soldiers used to say.

The combination of these advantages ensured that maces and war hammers remained in use for centuries, even after more complex weapons like crossbows had appeared on the battlefield.
