Playing cards - Scottish Thistle. According to surviving legend, the thistle became a symbol of the country at the time of the Viking raids, when one of the raiders entered the thistle unnoticed at night. His cries of pain woke the Scottish defenders, who gained time to defend themselves and defeated the invaders.
