Historical Information

In Roman times, torques-style jewelry was worn around the neck, on the upper arm, or on the wrist. This bracelet represents the Roman equivalent of today’s fixed circular bracelet.

The front of the card is adorned with an image of Actaeon, which is part of the “Four Seasons” mosaic from the 1st century AD. The mosaic comes from the floor of a Roman townhouse, the remains of which were discovered in 1849 on Dyer Street in Cirencester, England.

Actaeon, a figure from Greek mythology, is punished for spying on the goddess Diana while she was bathing. He is transformed into a stag and subsequently torn apart by his own hunting dogs.
